Functional Membranes

We have developed a scalable approach towards large scale fabrication of ultrafiltration polymeric membranes based on a two-step procedure, which exploits soluble template nano-particles allowing the formation of porous polymeric systems.

The research for porous polymeric membranes used for various filtration applications goes back a long way. Although constant optimization of old and newer membrane production methods, limitations are remaining. That is our motivation to continue developing a novel technique, which was invented at the FML and exploits soluble template nano-particles allowing the formation of porous polymeric systems. Lately we showed that extending the nanoparticle-polymer dispersion system by a specific additional liquid phase, surprising membrane morphologies can be reached during membrane formation. This new system is currently used at the FML to create different membrane architectures for guaranteeing stable high-flux membranes for water filtration, mechanically flexible metal-organic framework composite membranes for gas separation, etc.

Fluorine-free Functional Outdoor Clothing

Enlarged view: dispersionstable

Contact: Mario Stucki

Hazardous fluorine-based chemicals are the standard for high -end outdoor clothing up to now. We are going to change that. We use well known, fluorine free and even biodegradable polymers for functional outdoor clothing. Introduction of pores using solid templates allows us to engineer the desired performance parameters: breathability and waterproofing. As we are going for the practical proof of our product we already have and further will produce actual outdoor clothing, like jackets.

We use the latest state-of-the-art nano- and microtechnology to produce the full range of nano- to microfiltration polymeric membranes. These novel membranes offer innumerable possible applications. Current projects focus on water filtration for drinking water, pharmaceutical purification processes, organic solvent nanofiltration as well as high performance membrane materials for filtration under harsh conditions.
